WinRAR makes it easy to create, decompress, and open zip, rar, and other file formats. It compresses files so that they take up less space on your hard drive and makes them easier to send to friends or colleagues. Conversely, it makes it easy to decompress these files and open them when they are sent to you. It also allows you to add a layer of security to your private files, repair damaged files, and even create self-extracting files.

You need WinRAR when you receive or download a compressed file, such as a zip or rar. Simply right click on the file, click Extract File and then select the destination folder. In seconds the file will be decompressed, and easy to open. Other file formats supported include rar, zip, cab, arj, lzh, ace, tar, gzip, uue, iso, bzip2, z, and 7-zip.

Sometimes you may want to compress files, because they are large and you wish to use less space, or to make it easier to upload and send via the internet. To create a compressed file, click with the right mouse button and select New/WinRAR Archive, then right-click on the file you want to compress and select Add to archive. You can also create a file that can decompress itself, by clicking on self-extracting on the WinRAR interface.

WinRAR also makes it easy to secure sensitive files. It will a 256-bit AES encryption algorithm, and you can set up any password, which the receiver will need to open the file. Also, you have the option to attempt repairing damaged files.
