Skype is a popular text and video calling service. It can be great for keeping in touch with friends and family abroad. It can also serve as a home phone, including texting, international calls and more. Some features may need you to buy Skype credits to use.

The video call features in Skype are free, allowing you to see and hear other Skype users during the call. If the person you call does not answer, or you cannot take a call, voice or video messages can be left.

Group video chat is available for up to 10 other Skype users at no cost. Not sure who's speaking? You can choose to have the person speaking show up in a larger window on screen. Or if you wish, you can have the speaking person's window highlighted instead.

Chat in Skype includes features popular in today's messaging services. This includes, but not limited to:

  • Emoticon and emoji support
  • Share pictures and files
  • Moji support for short video responses
  • Group conversations with two or more Skype users
  • Translator feature to translate voice, video and text conversations

Skype maintains a simple, easy-to-use interface. At a glance, you can see your list of contacts, recent conversations and change the layout. You can also set a status, such as Busy, Away, Do Not Disturb or appear offline.

A Microsoft or Skype account is all that's required to get started. Outlook and Hotmail account logins can also be used for Skype. When you log in to Skype for the first time, you can choose to import contacts from Facebook or your email. You can also choose to add contacts manually.
