OneDrive (previously Microsoft SkyDrive), is an online file hosting service offered by Microsoft. It allows users to store files online to their Microsoft account to then access on other devices.

User's files in OneDrive are private by default, but can be shared with contacts or the public. Sharing files is easy thanks to integrations with Outlook.com and social media sites.

OneDrive keeps an access control list of users allowed to access files when invited. Whether it's Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn, OneDrive ensures only those invited can access files.

OneDrive has support for Office Online, allowing you to edit and share documents. This is great for devices that do not have Microsoft Office installed. Further to this, OneDrive supports viewing of PDF and Open Document Format files.

An online text editor is also available for some files in OneDrive. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Plain text files
  • programming and markup languages like HTML, CSS, PHP, C# and more

OneDrive comes with 5 GB of storage space free. Monthly subscriptions for extra storage are also available. Office 365 subscribers have a generous 1 TB storage so long as they keep it active.
