Miro is a free media player that is available for Windows and Mac. It is an open source development led by the non-profit group, Participatory Culture Foundation.

Miro started as Democracy Player, or DTV for short, at its public release in 2005. It was later changed to Miro in 2007.

Miro has a feature that can download videos from RSS channels, such as podcasts or news videos. It also includes a built-in BitTorrent client to support RSS BitTorrent downloads.

It supports playback of popular audio and video formats. Popular video formats that Miro supports are:

  • QuickTime (.mov)
  • Windows Media Video (.wmv)
  • MPEG (.mpeg, .mpg, .mp4)
  • Audio Video Interleave (.avi)
  • Xvid

Miro can also convert videos to run on mobile and tablet devices. Converted formats include Theora Ogg Video (.ogv), MPEG4 (.mp4), and WebM.
